How You Can Help

Donate

We are funded solely through the donations of those associated with Val’s trekking work, allied UK schools and friends. LED is fortunate to have several supporters who have donated significant funds or time to ensure the success of our work.

One off and monthly donations via JustGiving are gratefully received.  Even a small amount makes a big difference in these communities.

Canadian donors, please donate through Basic Health International. Under “special instructions”, specify the donation is for LED projects in Peru or Nepal. Basic Health International will then issue you a tax receipt.

If you’re an organisation looking for a charity to support – we’d be delighted to talk to you. We can provide information about our activities in a range of formats, and supporters based in a number of countries (and, of course, Val too) who can talk about our work.

We are also registered on easyfundraising.org.uk which is a great way to help raise money for LED just by shopping online. Read our blogpost for more details.

Volunteer

We continue to look for volunteers to help us provide medical training and support.

Are you a medical student looking for an overseas elective in the mountains? Medical staff and volunteers at our Health Post in Quishuar (in the heart of the Cordillera Blanca in Peru) come under the supervision of Dr País, Medico Anestesiologo en Hosp. II de ESSALUD Huaraz y Hosp. EGB Chimbote, and some medical students have completed their elective with a week at the hospital in Huaraz.

Contact us to find out more about volunteering opportunities.

In July 2014, three final year medical students spent 5 weeks working in Quishuar with a local nurse, translator and guide. Read their report.

In June 2015, retired GP Dr Sarah Watson spent 3 weeks in Quishuar, followed in July/August 2015 by Paul, Alex, Josh and Hugo, four medical students from the University of Leeds. You can read their reports here:

In 2016, Leeds University medical student Ross Gillespie spent 4 weeks as a volunteer at the LED health post. Read about his experience in Summer 2016 in Quisuar.

In August 2017, Leeds University medical students Ella and Laura spent August at the LED health post in Quisuar. Here’s what Laura has to say about the experience.

August 2018 saw Leeds medics Rachel, Alice, Heather and Katie spend their medical elective period at the LED health post in Quisuar. During their four weeks in the Cordillera Blanca they also ran mobile clinics in surrounding villages, delivering school supplies en route. Here’s their report.

Leeds medics Amy, Esme, Hugh and Natalie did a fantastic job in summer 2019 on their elective in Quisuar, providing medical advice at the health post, dealing with late and middle of the night emergencies, and running mobile clinics in Pingospamoa and Pochgo, as well as spending part of every school day teaching the village kids from Quisuar and Ingenio.

In summer 2022, Leeds medics James Peaty and George Thomas spent their medical elective period at the LED Health Post in Quisuar. Read James’ report on An Elective Volunteering in a Rural Peruvian Health Clinic and the report that George prepared for LED.

Dundee medics Angus, Jed, Lee and Jack spent 4 weeks at the health post LED supports in Quisuar in summer 2023 and as you can see from Angus and Jed’s write ups and photos, they had a rewarding and fun time.
