Nepal Update: September 2015 Report

At September’s LED Trustees meeting, Val provided her report on this year’s activities in Nepal so far, and plans for the current season.

Our focus has been on providing practical relief following the April 25 earthquake and its aftershocks:

  • Distribution of over 5 tonnes of donated items collected in Penrith in April / May.  The tents were distributed in Dolakha (west of Khumbu, one of the areas badly affected by the May earthquake), Gorkha and Nuwakot (60 km from Kathmandu, where nearly all buildings were flattened by the April earthquake) providing short term housing / shelter for 3500 people.
  • Building temporary shelters in Dolakha and Nuwakot .
  • Shelter sheets to house school children in Nuwakot district – resulting in 1500 kids being in school throughout this year’s monsoon.
  • Support for Dr Karmi Temba’s rebuilding work in Thame, the worst affected village in Khumbu, where he led the rebuilding the health clinic and helped to reestablish school. The big marquee tents which we received as donations meant that the children of Thame have been in school all monsoon.
  • Weekly meals for displaced Gorkha families in Pokhara
  • 600+ solar lights distributed – primarily in Solu and Gorkha areas (before and after the earthquake)
  • Training for 2 Nepali volunteers on earthbag building.

Big thanks go to Val’s friends in Nepal who’ve been our operators on the ground:

  • Gelek Rapten and Tenzing Lamo – organising the building of the school shelters in Nuwakot
  • Tenzing and Tsten – for the weekly meals to the Gorkha families in Pokhara
  • Tsering Sherpa – for all his help in Dolakha
  • Krishna Cook – for all his help in Nuwakot
  • Dr Karmi Temba – for all his work in Thame

and to everyone who gave time, money, things and support in the UK and Canada in the immediate aftermath of the earthquakes.

Facebook proved essential for sharing updates on progress on a day to day basis, and photos from LED activities in Penrith and Nepal. Here are some of them:

Plans and projects

Val returned to Nepal in early October, and is currently visiting Thame and Khunde in the Khumbu region to see how things are in the ground. She’ll then be running her first set of treks in the region since the earthquake.  Access to Manaslu and Tsum, close to the epicentre of April’s earthquake, remains difficult. One of Val’s priorities is to find out more about the current status of logistics and infrastructure in the area.

Our plans for the coming 6 months are:

  • To help with rebuilding in the Gorkha district, focusing on the Tsum valley, and using earthbag building and the two Nepalis we’re had trained in this technique.
  • To help with rebuilding Junbesi school. Four Canadian volunteers will be spending a month in Junbesi (Solu district, on the old Everest walk in) rebuilding part of the village school and the hostels that house the school children and teachers. Gelek Rapten, together with the Edmund Hillary Trust and UK volunteers, visited Junbesi at the end of September to assess the situation on the ground and what’s required.
  • To continue to provide and to distribute solar lights and school supplies:
  • Solar lighting engineer, Anthony, has sent 400 lights more for Val to distribute this season, to which we are able to add the lights we assemble in Nepal
  • In November, Val will lead a private trek to distribute 300 solar lights and school supplies in the Solu district.
  • In Manaslu, we will:
    • provide the annual school supplies for Samagaun and Samdo schools, and lights. Our plan to do this distribution in December.
    • rebuild Samagaun school
  • We are also exploring the possibility of building, staffing and supplying a health clinic in Tsum valley.

We’ll report back in December.

In the meantime, thank you to everyone who is fundraising for us, and for Nepal – follow us on Facebook and Twitter for details and updates.

Nepal Earthquake Relief – Looking Ahead

Nepal still needs our help. Since the first earthquake on 25 April, there have been more than 100 more of magnitude 4 or over, in different parts of the country. Many homes have been destroyed, and the monsoon rains arrive this month. Shelter is crucial. Longer term Nepal will need our help with rebuilding homes and livelihoods.

How you can help:

  • Donate here to support LED’s response to the earthquake in Nepal.
  • Organise a fund raising event.

Here are some of the events being held to raise money for LED:

  • Fulford school are hoping to raise £8848 (the height of Everest!) for LED and the DEC Nepal Earthquake Appeal through a series of events including a Nepal Fundraiser evening, junior football tournament, staff versus student assault course and staff three peaks on Saturday 20 June!
  • In Penrith TODAY (16 May), Jacob Sam-La Rose / Northern Sky are holding a benefit night for LED and the Juniper Trust.
  • On 23 May, Steve Razetti and the Earthquake Rockers are putting on a fund raising dance in Carlisle, and all proceeds will be divided between LED and the Juniper Trust.
  • Geoff Knight’s team at HSBC have made LED their chosen charity for the rest of the year. Various events are in the pipeline, including Richard Donoghue running the Liverpool marathon in June in aid of LED. HSBC are matching sponsorship £ for £ up to £500.

If you’re fund raising for LED, post on our Facebook page.

Donations large and small will allow us to make a difference on the ground.

Please give what you can. LED is run entirely by volunteers, so every penny you donate will help us to help those in need in Nepal – now and in the longer term.

We’ll keep you updated via Facebook and Twitter.

Nepal Earthquake – Two Weeks On

We’ve had a wonderful response to our request for donations – funds raised through JustGiving have topped £10,000, and on Thursday (07 May) the first shipment – 1.5 tonnes of donated tents, sleeping bags and supplies – landed in Kathmandu, flown out by the Gurkha regiment in York and collected with fabulous support from Fulford School.

This weekend (09 & 10 May) Val and the volunteers have been back at Eden Arts, Penrith, packing up our second shipment of 5 tonnes, mainly tents and sleeping bags which are still so badly needed on the ground in Nepal. Stobarts are transporting our gear from Penrith to Heathrow, and it’s flying out to Kathmandu with Turkish Airlines tomorrow.

Huge thanks to everyone who’s helped by donating gear, funds, transport and time. We couldn’t have done this without you.

We’re now working out our next shipment, but until that’s sorted please hold off with further donations of kit. We’ll keep you updated via Facebook and Twitter.

The groups we’re working with within Nepal have told us that, based on the lists of sizes and numbers of tents and tarpaulins we are sending, they think that they will be able to house about 3000 people and the large mess tents will be used as medical posts and community kitchens – similar to what you see here.

PHASE, Lakpa Doma, Pemba Sherpa and BELIEVERS have already distributed our stock of lights in the Kathmandu Valley and Gorkha. LED’s solar-powered lights distributed before the earthquake are now even more highly valued.

Nepal still needs our help. Many homes have been destroyed, and the monsoon rains arrive this month. Shelter is crucial. We receive daily pleas for tents and tarpaulins from our friends in Nepal, and the rain has already started.

Nepal Earthquake – Help us to help Nepal

How you can help:

Donate here to support LED’s response to the earthquake in Nepal.

Send tents/sleeping bags/water purification systems (by Wednesday 6th May) to:

Val Pitkethly
c/o 8 Trinity Park
Ripon
HG4 2ER

The main epicentre was in the Gorkha region, home to Manaslu and Tsum where we have donated lights, medical supplies and school supplies for many years – most recently in April this year. You can see photos from the trip here.

Val is working with contacts at PHASE in Kathmandu to get our stock of 250 solar lights distributed in the region as soon as possible, and has donated her tents and kitchen equipment to the villagers of Khunde in the Everest region.

Val’s currently in the UK where she is coordinating with PHASE’s UK team to gather relief supplies and to ship them out to Nepal. The priority needs are for: tents, sleeping bags and any kind of water purification system. We are aiming to ship out on/about Wednesday 6th May 2015.

The monsoon starts in earnest in May. 90% of homes have been destroyed in Manaslu / Tsum area so people desperately need shelter especially after the harsh winter they have had – they have lost 50% of their livestock already. Any tent or sleeping bag will do.

Looking further ahead we will be looking at long term help with rebuilding homes and livelihoods.

Donations large and small will allow us to make a difference on the ground, in Kathmandu as well as in these remote regions:

  • £10 will buy water purification and a small blanket in Kathmandu
  • £20 will buy a blanket that would cover a family in Kathmandu
  • £30 will buy a blanket plus a sack of rice in Kathmandu
  • £40 will help with getting tents shipped into the remote areas especially Manaslu area by helicopter, once they can start flying stuff in
  • £100 will provide basic food for a month for a family of 4/5 in one of the remote villages in Tsum / Manaslu

Please give what you can. Every penny you donate will go to Nepal – LED is run entirely by volunteers.

We’ll keep you updated via Facebook and Twitter.
