Proposed flags of Worcestershire (2013)[edit]

Article(s): Flag of Worcestershire
- Request
- Could someone please create SVG files for the other three finalists from the 2013 contest organised (by BBC Hereford & Worcester) to create a flag for Worcestershire, as seen here. I'd recommend labelling them "Design 1", "Design 2" and "Design 4" respectively. Thanks. Snow Lion Fenian (talk) 13:01, 16 September 2023 (UTC)

⅔ done @Snow Lion Fenian: I've made Design 1 and Design 2. I'm not sure how to get the swirls for Design 4, so I'll leave that to another graphist. —CalendulaAsteraceae (talk • contribs) 02:38, 20 October 2023 (UTC)
- @CalendulaAsteraceae: That's okay, and many thanks for creating the first two files! Snow Lion Fenian (talk) 13:22, 20 October 2023 (UTC)
- @Snow Lion Fenian: Do you have evidence to show that these designs are below UK's threshold of originality? --痛Designism (talk) 03:32, 5 November 2023 (UTC)
- @痛: Well, I have done a few reverse-image searches on these flags, and yet I wasn't able to find any relevant information on them (none of the other three seem to appear on the web anymore, outside of that Reddit link). But if anything relevant does come to light, I'll provide an update. Snow Lion Fenian (talk) 03:45, 6 November 2023 (UTC)
- @Snow Lion Fenian: You may want to check whether you can upload design 4 to enwiki under fair use. I have created the design 4 here, but I didn't upload it to Commons, because I found the shape too "creative" under UK's copyright law. --痛Designism (talk) 14:38, 6 November 2023 (UTC)
- @痛: Fair enough. Although, given all the uncertainty about its status, how would you feel about uploading it to WC as an "intentionally faked flag" instead? Specifically by using the type of wavy lines from this file here (bottom-left) as templates? As I really do think that, while they bear a reasonable resemblance to the wavy shapes on "Design 4", they couldn't be mistaken for exact duplicates of them either. What do you think? Snow Lion Fenian (talk) 13:04, 9 November 2023 (UTC)
- @Snow Lion Fenian, I think the resemblance to the original design file is better. I regret making "intentionally faked flags" in the past... I think faked flags should be used in non article namespaces (e.g., in a user box on a user page). 痛Designism (talk) 20:06, 9 November 2023 (UTC)

-

- Request
- How could I improve the readability of the text in the SVG for lower sizes (for comparison, a jpeg with similar text). --Enhancing999 (talk) 08:54, 11 October 2023 (UTC)
- Graphist opinion(s)
Use bigger fonts. The SVG font size is 1/6 the box height (20 px / 120 px). The JPEG fonts are relatively larger. Larger fonts means some names will not fit the width; the JPEG uses two lines for some names (see 1185) and abbreviations for others (see 1126). The JPEG also uses a even larger font for the map number. Glrx (talk) 17:24, 11 October 2023 (UTC)
- @Glrx: Thanks for your advice. I increased font-sizes and added classes for longer names (>12 chars) and sheet numbers.
- I hesitate to add more abbreviations. I split the "bis"-numbers on two lines, but left the name of 1185 on 1 line. Enhancing999 (talk) 20:08, 11 October 2023 (UTC)
- I split text in 2 lines where possible and added a different text size for short names.
- Font-sizes are now (in v 0.51): 35px (sheet number), 23px (longer names, 12 and more characters), 40px (short names, up to 6 characters), 30px (others). Enhancing999 (talk) 19:55, 12 October 2023 (UTC)
- @Enhancing999:
- I think you have a reasonable index. Congratulations on using classes. I would have kept the names at a single font size (like the JPEG version) to avoid making Basel appear more important than Sissach, but that is a personal preference. Also, the lines at the margins are 1/2 width; that can be fixed by offsetting and enlarging the size by a few pixels.
- You can add a feature to the red dots. Instead of
<circle cy="1020" cx="1200" fill="red" r="8" id="Bern_Swiss_grid_initial_point_zero" />
- do
<circle cy="1020" cx="1200" fill="red" r="8" id="Bern_Swiss_grid_initial_point_zero"> <title>Bern Swiss grid initial point zero</title> </circle>
- It will not show up on WP, but it will show up when the SVG is viewed directly
- Glrx (talk) 20:52, 12 October 2023 (UTC)
- Thanks. I noticed my preferred font-size varies based on the png size. I tried to improve the positioning, fixed the borders and added the title feature. Enhancing999 (talk) 07:52, 14 October 2023 (UTC)
- FYI, I made a request for this on COM:GL/M#Create a SVG version of File:Topo 25 sheets orig.jpg. It would be useful to add a background map, as mentioned there. And to have a version with the numbers only. Yann (talk) 21:01, 12 October 2023 (UTC)
- Will do a number only one later. Also one without the (partial) digital-only tiles (some barely cover anything at all, currently we only have "Samnaun Ost"). Enhancing999 (talk) 07:52, 14 October 2023 (UTC)
- Added it above. Also one for 1:50'000. Somehow the font looks better locally than rendered as png. Enhancing999 (talk) 14:35, 21 October 2023 (UTC)
- @Enhancing999: @Yann: @Glrx: While the mix of font sizes maximises legibility, the differences in size makes it look a little haphazard. May I recommend keeping the same size and subtly tweaking the letter-spacing and horizontal scaling? Here are a few ways to make small text more legible:
- Use a condensed font with large x-height. From [1], DejaVu Sans Condensed seems suitable.
- Use negative
letter-spacing
up to around 5% of the font size (e.g. -1px for 20px). - Scale horizontally using
transform="scale(0.9,1)"
down to around 90%. - For multiline labels, reduce line-spacing using
dy=0.9em
down to around 0.9em, depending on whether the text has ascenders or descenders.
- Additionally, tinting the tiles like a checkerboard lets gridlines be eliminated. Current shading can be replaced with boldface or coloured text. Cheers, cmɢʟee ⋅τaʟκ 02:44, 15 December 2023 (UTC)

- Graphist opinion(s)
- @Swiãtopôłk: I am scared of the first flag because I cannot tell whether the flag is supposed to look just like the UK flag, or if all its red lines are meant to be equal in width. The bottom right quarter of that flag looks like the top left quarter but rotated 45 degrees. I also cannot tell if the flag has a strictly triangular shape, or a square on the left and a triangle on the right. Do you happen to have better references to confirm these details? --痛Designism (talk) 22:32, 2 December 2023 (UTC)
@痛: Do this with a normal Union Jack. Unfortunately, I did not find any other sources that would provide certainty in the first matter, but the designer's intentions were probably the original flag of Great Britain. I've seen strangely drawn British flags in materials about the company and I think it's just a mistake. I am sure that it is a square with a triangle. This picture of the company's ships shows it this way. This flag looks different, but I suspect it's because the author of the drawing focused more on the ships than the flag. - Coat of arms of the Soviet Union (1936–1946).svg is the only vector file of the 1936 coat of arms of the Soviet Union. However, it's a poorly vectorized version since it's a bitmap tracing of a raster image. It's also not the most accurate to the official design as approved on May 27, 1937 (shown below). Could somebody please revectorize that image to make it a proper vector image and also an accurate representation of the official design? For reference, this file here is an accurate vector representation of the 1956 coat of arms. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Colohisto (talk • contribs) 00:58, 7 December 2023 (UTC)

- @Davest3r08:
- Although I prefer using text rather than curves, that poses many problems when trying to duplicate a logo's appearance.
- The first problem is finding the right font. Let's say that Arial Heavy is the right font.
- The second problem is specifying the font. Your file does
font-family: Arial Heavy; font-weight: normal;
. If an SVG agent does not have "Arial Heavy", then it will substitute a font, and it will use that font at a normal font weight. SVG wants the specification to befont-family: Arial; font-weight: heavy;
. In theory, if "Arial" is substituted, then we have a chance of getting a heavy font. Adobe tools can be even worse: they will use font names that encode both bold and italic variations. - The third problem is many SVG agents do a poor job of substituting a heavy font; perhaps because so few heavy fonts exist. It gets worse for some other font properties. WMF's
librsvg
does a decent job forfont-stretch: condensed
(but it does not know that it has the condensed Liberation Sans Narrow), but both Chromium and Firefox seem to ignorefont-stretch
. That means the only way to get the condensed font is to request something likefont-family: Noto Sans Condensed
, but that will doom most font substitutions in other SVG agents. - The fourth problem is the varying text metrics. Fonts do not scale linearly, and substituted fonts may have slightly different metrics. SVG 1.1 has the
textLength
property to force a specific width. Unfortunately, that property is not supported by the WMF rasterizer. - The fifth problem is SVG 1.1 does not have a method of specifying the font's cap height, so SVG 1.1 does not let us fit the text to a box. You used CSS Shapes
shape-inside:url(#rect2);
, but that is not SVG 1.1. - The sixth problem is WebFonts are a security issue. The exact font could be linked, but that introduces other headaches. SVG 1.1 allows embedded fonts, but that feature has been dropped.

- Glrx, the issue is that I don't have any experience in programming SVGs, so I have no idea on how to do that. I made that SVG in Inkscape. — Davest3r08 >:) (talk) 20:56, 1 January 2024 (UTC)
- I might try to follow your advice though. — Davest3r08 >:) (talk) 20:56, 1 January 2024 (UTC)

- The thumbnail maker bug http://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T97233#8977673 has caused some numbers along the vertical axis to be duplicated and other text to be misaligned. The original SVG doesn't have the issue. I've reported it but would someone be able to work around it in the meantime? Thanks, cmɢʟee ⋅τaʟκ 06:19, 2 January 2024 (UTC)
- Graphist opinion(s)
- @Cmglee:
- The file has many problems.
- I removed the #text nodes that followed a tspan element. That worked around the librsvg rendering bug and made the file render sensibly.
- The file has duplicated labels. For example, there are two "4000 K" labels. Normally, the labels would overwrite and not be noticable. With the librsvg bug and inconsistent markup, it would cause the middle and end anchored text to be doubled. (not fixed)
- For example, trsvg62 (no trailing #text node; end anchor on width of "2") and trsvg86 (has trailing text node; end anchor on width zero):
<g style="stroke:none;fill:black;font-family:Arial;font-size:12pt;text-anchor:end"> <g transform="translate(63.6,365.0)"> <switch><text id="trsvg62-ca" systemLanguage="ca"><tspan id="trsvg8-ca">2</tspan></text><text id="trsvg62"><tspan id="trsvg8">2</tspan></text></switch> </g> <g transform="translate(63.6,365.0)"> <switch><text id="trsvg86-ca" systemLanguage="ca"><tspan id="trsvg32-ca">2</tspan> </text><text id="trsvg86"><tspan id="trsvg32"> 2</tspan> </text></switch> </g> </g>
- The file has extraneoous spaces. (not fixed / not important)
- The file does not have explicit
systemLanguage="en"
clauses. (not fixed) - Glrx (talk) 04:15, 3 January 2024 (UTC)

Vector version of File:These Old Shades 1927 cover.jpg[edit]

the book cover
Article(s): s:en:Index:These Old Shades (Heyer 1927).pdf
- Request
- I would like a vector version of this book cover to use in the Wikisource transcription of These Old Shades. I have requested retouching at Commons:Graphic Lab/Photography workshop#Crop and retouch File:These Old Shades 1927 cover.jpg, but there are unavoidable flaws in the image because the book cover is worn at the edges and has tape on it (I'll see if I can get a better image of the lower left corner, though), and a vector version which didn't have these flaws would look a lot nicer. —CalendulaAsteraceae (talk • contribs) 23:08, 3 January 2024 (UTC)
