Licensing edit
It is frustrating that the photographer Harald Krichel whose many photos are available on Wikimedia/Wikipedia is using the services of Pixsy to bully and threaten small businesses and bloggers with copyright infringement lawsuits. This is hardly in the spirit of Wikimedia and the CC licenses available. Please reconsider your relationship with this photographer. Thank you. 152.44.211.156 20:06, 14 December 2023 (UTC)
- Pinging @Seewolf (Harald Krichel): do you have something to say in response to this? - Jmabel ! talk 21:53, 14 December 2023 (UTC)
- @IP the accusation is really strange as Seewolf is a member of VRT, has not uploaded "many photos", but only 125, has mostly imported files (PD or as an importer for VRT), only uploaded few "own" files (Seewolf could only for these make "bully and threaten") and Seewolf's "own" uploads are cc-by-sa-4.0 - a forgiving license that is avoided by copyright trolls. - Creative Commons frowns on such behavior. Their statement relating to copyleft trolls can be found below:
- "Put simply, “license-enforcement-as-business model” is a perversion of the founding ideals of Creative Commons. We condemn this behavior.
- These aggressive enforcement actions lessen trust in open licensing, and they erode the good faith ecosystem that is the basis of the commons.
- Together with our community, we will continue to take action to deter those who leverage CC licenses in bad faith. The health of the commons
- depends upon it."
- Full text can be read here.
- A growing number of us who have been harassed by Pixsy, acting on behalf of the photographers they represent, are planning to launch a Subreddit and website on this topic. The aim of this Subreddit/Site will be to share the names of these bad-faith actors and to provide support and resources for those who are dealing with similar legal threats and harassment.
- If Pixsy truly cared about enforcing photographers' copyrights, they would focus on real copyright infringement rather than attempting to extract money for minor attribution errors. I will share a link to the Subreddit and website once they’re available. CopyLeftTrolls (talk) 20:27, 25 December 2023 (UTC)
- Hi, Cory Doctorow and Joshua Brustein accuse Larry Philpot of using Commons to sue people. Nenad Stojkovic is also mentioned by Doctorow. Nightshooter didn't upload anything since October 2013, but we should probably do something here. Images by Marco Verch were previously deleted for the very same reason. Please exclude SVG translations via the SVG Translate tool from Special:AbuseFilter/290 edit
Hello. Mere translations of SVG files via the SVG Translate tool should be exempted from Special:AbuseFilter/290. This tool only lets users translate text labels in existing SVG files, which is a far cry from the major, disruptive overwrites that this abuse filter seeks to prevent. Thank you. Category:Category:Cantonal police of the [editing] question edit
Wondering if it can be edited to put the correct links? It's in here. Ominae (talk) 07:44, 23 December 2023 (UTC)
- Well the category has already some images see Category:Kantonspolizei Thurgau. If you want to ad images to the category, the categories are at the bottom of every page and with hitting the + sign a field in which you can add letters in it opens. Then the available categories will appear. Paradise Chronicle (talk) 15:48, 24 December 2023 (UTC)
- Nah. I'm talking about the "Cantons of Switzerland" portion for Kantonspolizei Thurgau (I'll use that). The "Cantons of Switzerland" has URLs going to commons page for the various Swiss cantonal police forces. I'm trying to see if it can be edited in order to update the links. Speedy deletion! edit
Are there any options for speedy deletion of images, or is there a separate process to nominate unambiguous copyrighted images for deletion apart from the usual nomination process? Jeraxmoira (talk) 18:32, 23 December 2023 (UTC)
- @Jeraxmoira: Commons:Criteria for speedy deletion. Also {{Copyvio}}. - Jmabel ! talk 19:16, 23 December 2023 (UTC)
- Thank you, Jmabel. This is very helpful. Is there a Twinkle alternative for commons, or should the tags be placed manually? Jeraxmoira (talk) 19:30, 23 December 2023 (UTC)
- @Jeraxmoira: I've never used Twinkle, so I have no basis or comparison. Speedy-deletion tags can be placed either manually or with VFC (for multiple identical SD requests). I suspect there are other ways as well, but these are the two I use. Do note, though: when asking for something to be speedy-deleted as a copyvio, you probably don't want to do something "mass", because you should present evidence (like a link to source). - Jmabel ! talk 20:18, 23 December 2023 (UTC)

- For information, archived copies of the full source article can be read at archive.org, but it doesn't provide any information about the copyright. That newspaper may have reproduced the image by some reason of fair use or news media or something else. If the artwork is determined to be free for some convincing reason, preferably by a declaration from the council and the artist or a related court decision or an authoritative legal commentary, Commons could upload it directly from an official source. -- Asclepias (talk) 16:06, 25 December 2023 (UTC)

Commons:Deletion requests/File:Coat of arms of Caracas (2022).png edit
AbchyZa22 (talk) 17:21, 24 December 2023 (UTC)
- The best way to have a safe answer about the copyright status of the official version of this artwork would be to obtain an official statement on this matter from the municipal council of Caracas and from Omar Cruz, the artist who created the artwork. Someone interested should try to obtain that.
- Other than that, it is a question for jurists in Venezuelan law.
- Here, I think we can only make a few partial observations:
- Someone in the DR quotes some bits of art. 2 of the copyright law to argue that this artistic work is not covered by the copyright law. That doesn't work. Cf. the first paragraph of art. Art. 2 is not limitative. There is nothing in that article that excludes artistic works from the law just because they are artistic renderings of coats of arms.
- In the Ley Orgánica, art. 321 states "Normativa aplicable: Toda producción intelectual que se genere en el proceso social de trabajo se regirá por las leyes que regulan la materia, bien sean: obras del intelecto o actividades conexas, invenciones, diseños industriales o marcas. [...]". The various articles from 320 to 329 do not always mention the same terms. For example, art. 329 mentions "obras de carácter [...] artístico". The title of art. 325 mentions "Invenciones, innovaciones y mejoras". One would have to determine if art. 325 applies to this type of artistic works, and, if so, then one would have to determine if this particular work by Omar Cruz was "generada bajo relación de trabajo en el sector público, o financiada a través de fondos públicos". All that is a matter for specialized jurists in Venezuelan law.
- Another thing to consider is to determine what the copyright status of the work is in the United States. If it is in the public domain in Venezuela, what is the status in the United States and who, if anyone, owns the copyright in the United States? That question could be asked also at Commons:Village pump/Copyright.
- Again, instead of debating on Commons, the best and easiest solution is to obtain a statement from the municipal council of Caracas and from Omar Cruz. If they agree that this work is in the public domain in Venezuela and in the United States, then the matter is solved to the satisfaction of everybody. If they say that it is protected by copyright and not free, either in Venezuela or in the United States, then it is better to not host it on Commons, unless someone is prepared to have a legal argument with them. -- Asclepias (talk) 20:56, 24 December 2023 (UTC)
Can someone read this signature? edit
Can anyone read the signature on the photo at File:The Town Crier, v.15, no.47, Nov. 20, 1920 - DPLA - e4f9b50e68fa4f2e208e390a8311e8ec (page 14).jpg? - Jmabel ! talk 02:10, 24 December 2023 (UTC)
- @Jmabel: I can't make it out, except for the letters LA (for Los Angeles) on the second line. But this appears to be one of several publicity photos of Walthall taken by, or at least published by, the Category:Photoplayers Studio in Los Angeles, which was active in the 1910s and 20s: here's a copy of the same photo, with the Photoplayers signature; and here's another photo obviously taken at the same sitting, again with the Photoplayers signature. If the version published in the Town Crier has a different signature, perhaps the original photographer joined the studio, or studio bought out and rebranded his work? Crawdad Blues (talk) 14:08, 24 December 2023 (UTC)
- Incidentally, I think the file name and description of File:Henry B. Walthall in Ibsen's "Ghosts".jpg is misleading. This appears to be one of a series of general publicity photos, not a photo of Walthall specifically in the role of Osvald in Ibsen's Ghosts, and the source doesn't claim that the photo has anything to do with Ghosts. It simply says that (a) this is a photo of Walthall, and (b) he will be appearing in the play on the following Sunday. Crawdad Blues (talk) 17:39, 24 December 2023 (UTC)
- Thanks, Crawdad Blues, I'll follow up on that. - Jmabel ! talk 00:22, 25 December 2023 (UTC)
- Searching around at archive.org and newspapers.com, I found that the LA Photoplayers Studio was founded in 1914 – by three persons, G(eorge) G. Wells, E(thel) F. Vincent, and Harry N. Naugle –, and the last I could find of them was a 1919 newspaper item that they had won a lawsuit against comedians Kolb and Dill. So they might have been already out of business in 1920, with some other photographer or studio taking over their negatives. --Rosenzweig τ 01:40, 25 December 2023 (UTC)
- That gives a very good indication. It allows to say that the signature looks like Wells & Vincent. Compare for example with this and this. -- Asclepias (talk) 02:45, 25 December 2023 (UTC)
- Ha :-) Harry D. Naugle (not "N." as I first thought) was a guy active in film distribution. He was the manager of Clune's Broadway Theatre in LA until 1914, then worked for various "exchange" companies as they were called then, in 1917 for Vitagraph. He was probably the guy providing money and left to pursue other career goals. That leaves the other two as the actual photographers. I didn't have much luck finding anything about George G. Wells, but Ancestry gave me an Ethel Vincent, born in Minnesota in 1892, present in LA from 1910 and apparently a photographer. That might be the Ethel F. Vincent we have here. --Rosenzweig τ 12:07, 25 December 2023 (UTC)

PD-US edit
Hi, I wanted to transfer this file from Flickr. It seems to be old enough to be in public domain. But I couldn't find any specific date in which it was built or placed there. Should I still transfer it here anyway? If I do which PD tag should I use? Syrus257 (talk) 14:03, 24 December 2023 (UTC)
- Hi @Syrus257, we have a category for the Elmwood cemetery with other grave stones which seem of lesser age. I suggest to upload it and leave a short description about when the lady died. For the question below I have no answer. Paradise Chronicle (talk) 15:43, 24 December 2023 (UTC)
- @Paradise Chronicle Thanks. Syrus257 (talk) 05:21, 25 December 2023 (UTC)
Another question. This Flickr user uploaded his images under CC BY 2.0 license. But in his "about" page he wrote that he forbid the usages of his pictures in pornographic, violent or radical context. Here in Commons only the materials that can used "by anyone, anytime, for any purpose" are allowed. So can I still transfer the images from this flickr account?Syrus257 (talk) 15:07, 24 December 2023 (UTC)

- @Jeff G. What happens if a flickr author decides to make the same announcement long after their work has been transferred here? Syrus257 (talk) 05:17, 25 December 2023 (UTC)
- @Syrus257 Actually there is also a shortcut. We also host such files on commons. I am sure the flickr uploader would allow its use on wikipedia, but unfortunately (at least in this specific case) commons is not only for wikipedia. Paradise Chronicle (talk) 05:23, 25 December 2023 (UTC)

- On commons there are also pictures with pornographic, violent and radical content, for informational purposes of course, but such files still exist. Also, what is so exceptional in those images? - @Jeff G. Undersood. But my question was, what if they change their user page or image description after their images are being transferred here? For example, I transferred File:Quebec-00024 - Saint Joan of Arc.jpg here 2 days ago. It is published under CC BY-SA 2.0 license. Now what if the author of this image decides today that he won't allow people to use this image in some specific cases, and write it on his user page without replacing the existing license. Then what should be done? Syrus257 (talk) 06:25, 25 December 2023 (UTC)

- And even if we don't know if those conditions were added before or after the transfer? Syrus257 (talk) 06:48, 25 December 2023 (UTC)

Then if he didn't change the license after a few days, I would upload files to Commons. He couldn't say afterwards that he wasn't informed. Yann (talk) 08:50, 25 December 2023 (UTC)
Merci MESLET-ARENE (talk) 15:22, 24 December 2023 (UTC)
Hello, how come I cannot have access to the photo of building no. 7 Utrechterstrasse on the site "liste der baudenkmaler im kolner stadtteil neustadt sud". THANKS

-- Asclepias (talk) 17:14, 25 December 2023 (UTC)
Lighten background of Hibex.jpg edit
I was wondering if someone might be able to "lighten" the background of the image File:Hibex.jpg so that the subject missile stands out more? It's a busy image! Maury Markowitz (talk) 16:39, 24 December 2023 (UTC)

- @Maury Markowitz: requests like this are best made at Commons:Graphic Lab/Photography workshop. - Jmabel ! talk 23:36, 24 December 2023 (UTC)
- I looked everywhere for a link to such a page. The "Help center" on the left does not link to it. There is a completely different "Help desk" (here), which is reached only through "Village pump", which makes it difficult to imagine how one might find it (why isn't a link to the Help desk on the Help center?). The link, which I see now at the top right, disappears when one presses + to add a comment to this page. Very confusing.
- So, armed with the title you provided, I found and went to the page, and clicked the button to make a new request. That resulted in a page of gobblygook with unicode characters and multiple templates. Do we expect new users to be able to use this? Maury Markowitz (talk) 14:15, 25 December 2023 (UTC)

MP3 Uploading edit
Hello. I heard that on there: i must have some experience to be able to upload MP3's. I have good reasons to want that, they can be found on the history of that help desk. When will I be able to upload MP3's? If that require some group joinages, may i join that groups (while i don't made very much changes and uploades in there i am more active in the Turkish Wikipedia and i am a white list on there)? - @RuzDD: on the first page of your preferences (Special:Preferences), what does it list as "Member of groups"? - Jmabel ! talk 00:20, 25 December 2023 (UTC)
- @RuzDD: Hi again. I am sorry to inform you that you have triggered Special:AbuseFilter/192 by trying to upload an mp3 file with insufficient rights. Too many people try to upload audio files that are still copyrighted by the authors, performers, recorders, publishing companies, etc. without proper licenses from those people. Please document fully the sources and licenses of your audio uploads, and request Autopatrol group membership at COM:RFR when you think you are ready (once you have made more than 500 useful non-botlike edits); having that should allow you to upload mp3 files. Until then, you may reencode the audio into Vorbis or Opus and upload it with full documentation as an .ogg or .oga file (or use any other format accepted per COM:FT#Sound). — 🇺🇦Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 04:32, 25 December 2023 (UTC)
- Thanks, but i want to ask another thing: is the reason of copyrighted musics generally uploaded as MP3 this is a very common format? If that is true, i think 8000, 11025, and 12000 (maybe also twices of these) Hz MP3's must not trigger an abusefilter because these sampling rates are not very common and they will be enough for me :) RuzDD (talk) 12:34, 25 December 2023 (UTC)
- @RuzDD: No, that is not the reason. There is a plethora of MP3 files containing non-free music on the Internet, and we cannot host them thanks to RIAA's influence on US copyright laws. — 🇺🇦Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 12:44, 25 December 2023 (UTC)
- @Jeff G. I mean that, and i know that MP3's on the Internet are generally at the sampling rate of 32000, 44100, or 48000 Hz and 8000, 11025, and 12000 Hz rates are most uncommons. Can anyone modify the filter to allow 8000, 11025 and 12000 Hz (and maybe also 16000, 22050 and 24000 Hz) MP3's? RuzDD (talk) 12:59, 25 December 2023 (UTC)
- @RuzDD: I don't think the filtering system is sophisticated enough to detect and act on sampling rates. You may file a task via phab: requesting that. — 🇺🇦Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 13:03, 25 December 2023 (UTC)

Upload audio ogg file, adding "children" to infobox, adding "signature" to infobox edit
Hello, How do I add and audio file (ogg) to Wiki Commons? I am not sure what choices to make. It is for a musical artist. I am building her wikipedia pages. I would like to add "children" and her "signature" to her infobox. However I do not have the choices for "children" nor "signature." Do you give permission for this? If I go to the Community Portal, would they be able to help me with this?
Thanks, Demetrius Wiki-Wiki-2028 (talk) 11:56, 26 December 2023 (UTC)
- @Wiki-Wiki-2028 Oh dear, so many things come together and get mixed up. I assume the article for the musician was supposed to be in the English Wikipedia and has already been deleted. That's something you need to clarify on the English-language Wikipedia and not here on Commons. Likewise the questions about the infobox and the children. You have uploaded several images here on Commons. One with the signature. That's fine so far and when the article is (again) available on the English-language Wikipedia, you can also clarify this there. However, you have uploaded further images of which you say that you are the author. However, these are very low-resolution images. This is undesirable here and is often a sign of stolen images. So if they really are yours, please upload them in full resolution and verify them with VRT. The VRT process has already started for one image, but you will probably have to add more. Then you seem to be writing on behalf of the musician, you must at least disclose this on the English-language Wikipedia, otherwise you will be banned. You can also find out how to do this there, not here. C.Suthorn (@Life_is@no-pony.farm - p7.ee/p) (talk) 15:51, 26 December 2023 (UTC)
- On the conflict-of-interest issue (an issue mainly on Wikipedia, not here on Commons), see en:WP:COI. And I strongly recommend you make the required disclosures or, as C.Suthorn says, your account will probably be blocked on the English-language Wikipedia. - Jmabel ! talk 21:28, 26 December 2023 (UTC)
Category:Trains passing through Shifen Old Street,因此現在是「Category:Trains passing through ???」這樣留下未命名的問號分類,但我還沒有建立,直到這個問題解決。--125.230.89.198 12:22, 26 December 2023 (UTC)
Pictures of my grandgrandfather edit
I wanna make a wikipedia page about my grandgrandfather who was a big artist and renovated for big churches in the mid 1900's, but when I try to upload some foto's it says that you couldn't figure out if the pictures arent copyrighted or something. I had these pictures in the living room since god knows what. Please help me update them I means a lot to me and I just feel like he deserves a wikipedia page after what has he done. Thank and please respond quickly. Proftomasek (talk) 17:57, 27 December 2023 (UTC)
- @Proftomasek: You may need to declare your w:WP:COI before making an article about your great-grandfather. As for copyright, when did he die and which country did he live in? (to help determine the copyright status of his works). Abzeronow (talk) 18:03, 27 December 2023 (UTC)
- He died in Tanvald (Czechoslovakia) on 27 July 1964 and he lived in Czechoslovakia (mainly Prague). Proftomasek (talk) 18:12, 27 December 2023 (UTC)Ce
- OK, his works are protected in Czechia until January 1, 2035 and cannot be uploaded on Commons until then. English Wikipedia would only require publication before 1928 so works published before then can be locally uploaded there. (Yes, copyright terms are rather long). Abzeronow (talk) 18:21, 27 December 2023 (UTC)
- @Abzeronow and Proftomasek: other than the remark about en:WP:COI (Proftomasek, please do read that) that's not quite on the mark. If Proftomasek is the heir to their (I assume from the odd wording) great-grandfather's intellectual property, and if their great-grandfather took the photos, they could upload them here under an "heirs" license tag such as {{Cc-by-sa-4.0-heirs}} or {{heirs}}. On the other hand, if the photos were taken by someone else, that person or their heirs would have to give the relevant permissions. Also, if the photos are previously published, you would definitely have to go through the process described at COM:VRT.
- Proftomasek, I'd be glad to work with you on what can or can't be done. The Commons side of this is going to come down mainly to copyright issues; the Wikipedia side is going to come down mainly to conflict-of-interest issues. We can continue discussing here, or we can continue on your talk page (User talk:Proftomasek), which I'll make a point of following. - Jmabel ! talk 19:09, 27 December 2023 (UTC)
- Thanks for the addendum, Jmabel. Yes, if Proftomasek is the heir to the intellectual property, then yes, they could upload as such. And they may need to get permission for the photographs were taken by someone other than their great-grandfather. Abzeronow (talk) 19:27, 27 December 2023 (UTC)
- Thank you for your answer too. Proftomasek (talk) 19:44, 27 December 2023 (UTC)
- Thank you for your answer. Proftomasek (talk) 19:44, 27 December 2023 (UTC)
- @Jmabel, in case you didn't see it, Jan Tomášek. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 09:24, 28 December 2023 (UTC)
- @Proftomasek: quite a bit in these uploads is at least problematic. You never did say whether you are the heir to the relevant intellectual property. If you are, most of this is easily cleared up. If not, it's hard to see how we can keep anything but the signature.
- First a remark: copyright in the Czech Republic is life + 70 years. That means that if the author of the work lived until 1953 or later (1954 or later, as of this coming Monday), any copyrightable work is still copyrighted.
- Neither File:Jan Tomášek podpis.jpg, File:Jan Tomášek se synem Miloslavem.png, nor File:Jan Tomášek dopis od Osvobozeného Divadla.jpg can possibly be your "own work" (I guess a case could be made for File:Jan Tomášek podpis.jpg that the close-up photo is your own work, but what makes it if interest is presumably that it is Jan Tomášek's signature, which is clearly his work, not yours.). Please attribute the authorship accurately. (See, for comparison, what I did with File:Kamekichi Tokita, 'Backyard' (1934).jpg, admittedly a whole work, not just a signature, but note the difference between the photo credit and the credit for the underlying work).
- The first two lack categories. And you haven't created Category:Jan Tomášek (let me know if you do not understand how to do that).
- File:Jan Tomášek podpis.jpg is dated "mid-1900s" which would mean 1905; I presume you meant mid-20th-century, {{circa|1950}}. Is that correct?
- I'm guessing that the signature itself in File:Jan Tomášek podpis.jpg is below the threshold of originality for copyright (most signatures are), though the painted background could imaginably be a problem. Still that one is probably OK if we just clarify authorship.
- File:Jan Tomášek se synem Miloslavem.png: who took the photo? Until that is sorted out, the copyright status cannot possibly be determined.
- File:Jan Tomášek dopis od Osvobozeného Divadla.jpg: Presumably the copyright on that logo across the top at least originally resided with someone connected to the theatre, right? As I said above, certainly not "own work". Who designed the logo? Again, until that is sorted out, the copyright status cannot possibly be determined.
- I'm sorry, I'm sure this is not what you wanted to hear, but the simple fact is that Commons only hosts works that are either public domain or have an appropriate free license, and only a person who holds the copyright can issue the license. For File:Jan Tomášek podpis.jpg, you are claiming to own a copyright and to issue a license on something that is probably not copyrightable; it should probably be re-tagged at {{PD-ineligible}}, and we can keep it on that basis. For the other two, you are claiming to own a copyright and to issue a license on something that was certainly originally copyrightable, may still be copyrighted, is certainly not your "own work", and where it is not clear whether you own the copyright, and (if so) on what basis. - Jmabel ! talk 19:57, 28 December 2023 (UTC)
- I would probably read mid-1900s as mid-20th-century (I would write c. 1905 otherwise), but I agree with your logic. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 20:03, 28 December 2023 (UTC)

- You mention that your grandfather renovated churches. If the church is in Slovakia or Czechia then I recommend that you take exterior (outdoors) photographs of the church, since the freedom of panorama laws likely allow you to publish such photos without the permission of your grandfather's heirs. You still need permission from the photographer, which is why I recommend taking photos yourself. Also Abzeronow's note about declaring conflict of interest still applies. – b_jonas 17:08, 31 December 2023 (UTC)
Fluidesign boats logo edit
Hello,
I am currently working on a Wikipedia article titled Fluidesign boats and would like to enhance it with the company's logo for identification in the infobox. Attached is the logo file for Fluidesign. Could someone assist with uploading it to Wikimedia Commons in compliance with the relevant copyright and licensing requirements? Here is the logo file: 15005_fluidesign-inc_logo.png.
Thank you for your assistance!
Best regards, TudorTulok (talk) 18:00, 27 December 2023 (UTC)
- @TudorTulok: that logo is right on the edge as to whether it is copyrightable. I'd seek others' opinion at Commons:Village pump/Copyright. If you ask there, mention that this is about Canada, because the threshold of originality varies from country to country.
- In any case, if all you are concerned with here is to get the logo into an English-language Wikipedia article, not specifically onto Commons, en-wiki (but not Commons) allows non-free use for cases like this. See en:Cadillac and en:File:Cadillac_(logo).svg for a good example of how to do this correctly. - Jmabel ! talk 19:14, 27 December 2023 (UTC)

Can you tell me?

- @Darren J. Prior: it appears on all contribution pages, beside those edits that are the latest made to the page. In other words, nothing has changed there since that edit was made, and in the page’s history it would appear at the top. - @Oscar Antonio: that template was presumably not the problem. The problem is presumably the absence of a license template. Since you don't say what file you are talking about, I can't say anything more specific. - Jmabel ! talk 06:22, 30 December 2023 (UTC)

Adding existing file to the "Media in category "Füssen"" section at Category:Füssen page edit
Hello. I would like to add a already existing file to the "Media in category "Füssen"" section at the Category:Füssen page. But I don't know how to add the already existing file. Can anyone please help me? Thanks in advance. P3Y229 (talk) 17:45, 30 December 2023 (UTC)
- @P3Y229: Hello, Please do not do that, because this file is already in specific subcategories of the category Füssen. For the policy on categories, you can see Commons:Categories. -- Asclepias (talk) 18:19, 30 December 2023 (UTC)
- @Asclepias:: Thanks for your information. Added the already existing file at the Füsssen page as an addition to an already existing, closely related image. P3Y229 (talk) 22:17, 30 December 2023 (UTC)
Upload image from unsplash.com edit
Hello friends, I hope you are well and Merry Christmas :) I have a question, if we see an image on unsplash.com and that image can be used on wikipedia, can we upload it here due to unsplash's free license? Is there a specific way to upload? Meyboad (talk) 22:31, 30 December 2023 (UTC)

Category "Good pictures" dropdown edit
I have never understood how this is supposed to work. Let me give the random example of Category:Grange Chine. When I initially open this page, the dropdown at the top right of the page reads "Good pictures", giving the impression that this is what is being shown. However, when I actually click on "Good pictures", there is a message "No results" (message is too unobtrusive IMO, and main contents of page remain unchanged). Then when I click "All images" in the dropdown, the page layout changes, but the dropdown again goes back to reading "Good pictures". Is it just me, or is this dropdown not working correctly? ITookSomePhotos (talk) 23:26, 30 December 2023 (UTC)
- @ITookSomePhotos: it can only be expected to work fully on a category page where there are images with the chosen designation. What happens if you click “Quality images” in the drop-down at Cruise ships in British Columbia?—Odysseus1479 (talk) 01:57, 31 December 2023 (UTC)
- @Odysseus1479: Of course, it can only display images of the chosen type when some exist, but when none exist it should still behave sensibly. As I said, category pages initially come up ostensibly showing "Good pictures", even though when you explicitly choose "Good pictures" there are said to be "No results" (yet the page itself confusingly carries on showing what actually appears to be all members of the category). So perhaps pages come up initially showing "All images" (in the category), but no, apparently not, since choosing "All images" produces something different again. It is confusing and appears broken to the ordinary user. BTW, at Cruise ships in British Columbia the dropdown does not work at all for me (unresponsive). ITookSomePhotos (talk) 20:54, 31 December 2023 (UTC)
- @ITookSomePhotos: it’s supposed to create a gallery of borderless images above all the other content, each with a small badge indicating the type of ‘goodness’. (It does not filter or hide items on the rest of the page.) Yesterday it was fairly prompt, but when I tried today my request went into a queue—as indicated in the status line, which is indeed “unobtrusive”, speaking diplomatically. ;) Give it a few minutes, though; it did come through for me eventually. (I believe “All images” means all those designated in the menu below, not literally all.) TBH I don’t use the tool often or know much about it; I suggest posting at the Technical Village Pump for more info about its function or to find out who maintains it.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 21:37, 31 December 2023 (UTC)
P.S. I just noticed that Help:FastCCI is linked from the bottom menu item.—21:47, 31 December 2023 (UTC)- @Odysseus1479: Thanks, what you say does make sense. It seems to me, then, that the main problem, or the biggest source of confusion, is that the category page initially displays with the heading "Good pictures", giving the obvious impression that the initial page contents are "Good pictures", and that choosing something else from the dropdown list will change those contents to something else. I think it would be much clearer if the dropdown initially said something like "Choose type" ("type" isn't the best word), and also if the behaviour was improved when the chosen type doesn't exist -- not just a tiny line "No results" that appears to contradict the fact that the page as a whole remains populated with exactly the same items as before, i.e. what seems like the same "results". klete keller edit
Hi, maybe someone can help - i'm not a lawyer and can't figure out all these complicated licenses.. the only photo I could find of Klete Keller that may be allowed on wikipedia is this: https://www.flickr.com/photos/emmymik/1012273538 ..It currently has a status of: "some rights reserved" - https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/2.0/ CC BY-NC-ND 2.0 DEED This might as well be chinese to me - can someone advise if this photo can be added to the Klete Keller wiki page without risk of deletion? thank you 84.247.97.10 04:40, 31 December 2023 (UTC)
- That is a no go for Commons because it has a noncommercial restriction (NC) and doesn't allow derivative works (ND), both of which go against what Commons considers a free license. Abzeronow (talk) 16:23, 31 December 2023 (UTC)

- On Flickr, when searching for photos after the basic term or name you're searching for, click the "Any license" and select "Commercial use & mods allowed" to find images free enough for use on Wikimedia Commons. Being respectful to the photographer edit
A photographer gave permission for an image to be released to Creative Commons 4.0. All has gone well. Permissions all done properly and the VRT are content.
However, both being newish at wiki, both the photographer and I have just noticed that the all the metadata has been uploaded - including that photographers's contact details.
While the photographer is happy to release the image under creative commons, photographer didn't mean to release personal information. (Yes, something to watch for next time.)
Now I can edit information in the "Summary" section regarding the image over at commons.wikimedia.org — however, I can't edit the metadata section. I'm guessing it can only be done by an admin.
Going off the general principles of anonymity and so on, seems right to ask if those details can be removed. Can someone tell me the right person, and the right way, to ask?
Thanks! And happy New Year!
MatthewDalhousie (talk) 03:28, 1 January 2024 (UTC)
- @MatthewDalhousie: Hi, and welcome. You can remove the offending metadata from your local copy of that file (perhaps with Windows Explorer's "Properties / Details / Remove Properties and Personal Information / Create a copy with all possible properties removed", jpegtran, jpegcrop, or Jimpl), overwrite it here on Commons per COM:OW, then ask at COM:AN for courtesy deletion of the first offending version. — 🇺🇦Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 06:37, 1 January 2024 (UTC)
- @Jeff G., I'm going to take this tip. Seems to fit with the principles mentioned at COM:AN - thank you kindly! MatthewDalhousie (talk) 02:41, 3 January 2024 (UTC)
- @Jeff G.I tried uploading the same images - with that unwanted info removed from the metadata - but I'm afraid the process stopped with a message "This file did not pass verification." Possibly because Commons can tell it already has that image?
- Must say I feel very nervous about attempting to over write existing image files with a new files, and this has made me more wary! Do you think it would be okay if I ask someone at COM:AN to remove that one line of info?
- Open to other suggestions if you have them! MatthewDalhousie (talk) 07:23, 3 January 2024 (UTC)
- @MatthewDalhousie you need to overwrite the existing file with a file in the same extension (format). RZuo (talk) 07:31, 3 January 2024 (UTC)
- Hi @RZuo,
- Thanks for your help.
- I am trying to do as you've said.
- I have gone to each of the image files in question on commons, such as: | Michael Holm speaking to Sen. Zed Seselja (reverse) and local VP 21.02.2022.jpg
- Then I have selected the Edit tab. From there, I have selected the "images and media" icon. A window pops up and from there I can upload the replacement file, which I've done.
- At the point of upload, each time I get a message: Something went wrong / This file did not pass verification. / Dismiss
- I hit "Dismiss" then I return to the starting point of the process.
- Thanks for your patience with this - please let me know any suggestions.
- 08:18, 3 January 2024 (UTC) MatthewDalhousie (talk) 08:18, 3 January 2024 (UTC)
- Okay, here's a workaround. Let me know if you think it's okay.
- I've gone to Flickr and replaced the images there, so the metadata has no contact information.
- Then I've gone back to wiki commons and used the Flickr upload wizard. And that process goes smoothly.
- I could go ahead with that, upload to the right places. Then simply ask admins to delete the older images with the problematic metadata.
- Does that sound like a plan?
- MatthewDalhousie (talk) 08:34, 3 January 2024 (UTC)
- @MatthewDalhousie can you, on that file page, not click "the edit tab"? instead, look for "Upload a new version of this file", click that and continue from there. RZuo (talk) 08:37, 3 January 2024 (UTC)
- RZuo (talk) 08:38, 3 January 2024 (UTC)
- Ah! I see it now. Will give that a go! MatthewDalhousie (talk) 08:42, 3 January 2024 (UTC)
- @RZuothanks for persevering here - I'm persevering too.
- 1. I found the "upload a new version", thanks (and thank you for going to the trouble of creating a screenshot, going well beyond the call).
- 2. I upload the file, being careful to make sure it's the same extension and same file type (the existing file in the commons is a jpeg, and so is the replacement file, both of them ending with .jpg).
- 3. When I hit upload I get this message: "File extension ".jpg" does not match the detected MIME type of the file (image/png)."
- 4. I've then double checked the file I'm uploading, and the existing file, at the excellent MIME checker https://mime.ritey.com/
- 5. Done the same process, got the same result. (You're welcome to check the MIME type of the file I'm aiming to replace - it's here )
- Any suggestions? MatthewDalhousie (talk) 23:36, 3 January 2024 (UTC)
- @MatthewDalhousie: If you are overwriting a JPEG, you have to overwrite it with an actual JPEG. Putting the extension ".jpg" on a PNG doesn't turn it into a JPEG, you have to convert it (e.g with GIMP, ImageMagick, GraphicsMagick, or even Microsoft Paint). - Jmabel ! talk 00:10, 4 January 2024 (UTC)

- Matter resolved! Thank you @Jmabel @Jeff G. and @RZuo.
- While the MIME checking site affirmed the files were jpeg, I decided to reupload them to Apple Mac Preview then re-export them as jpegs, just to be sure. Uploaded and overwrote without any issue. Thanks for your guidance through this.

TimedText for Tooro edit
It seems that the Tooro language is not supported by TimedText, as the namespace for Tooro subtitles says "ttj subtitles for clip:" instead of "Tooro subtitles for clip:" (unlike related languages such as Nyoro, Nkore and Kiga) and the CC icon will not allow you to use Tooro subtitles. Thus, for Anthem of the Tooro Kingdom.oga, only the English subtitles can be used despite the Tooro subtitles also existing. Ahiise2 (talk) 16:11, 1 January 2024 (UTC)

Photo licensing question edit
I am a Wikipedia editor. I have a photo for a biographical article about a deceased person. The person who permitted me to use the photo owns the physical copy of the photo, which was given to him by the family of the deceased person. The owner of the photo understands what a photo being on wikimedia commons entails, and is happy for this photo to be uploaded.
Do I need permission from the family of the subject of the photo before uploading? Menacinglavender (talk) 05:24, 2 January 2024 (UTC)
- @Menacinglavender: you don’t say what country the photo is from or when it was taken, but the person from whom you need permission is usually the photographer (or xyr heirs). If it’s an impromptu/amateur photo that might indeed be a family member, but otherwise they have no say insofar as copyright is concerned. If the photo is old enough we can assume it to be PD, even if the creator is unknown, with no permission needed from anybody. (A “Collection of X” credit to the owner is good for provenance, aside from being courteous, but is not required for licensing.)—Odysseus1479 (talk) 07:49, 2 January 2024 (UTC)
- But "old enough" is quite old: 120 years (1903 or earlier) and/or (if it is in the U.S.) published before
19231929. (There are a few countries with shorter terms, e.g. Argentina, Italy.) - Jmabel ! talk 18:53, 2 January 2024 (UTC)- Before 1923? Didn't we just advance to "before 1929"? --Rosenzweig τ 18:57, 2 January 2024 (UTC)
- If this is for the English-language Wikipedia, it may be simpler to leave Commons out of the picture and upload the image on a non-free basis. See en:John du Pont for a good example (click through on the lead photo, you'll see how they handled this). - Jmabel ! talk 19:01, 2 January 2024 (UTC)
- From the OP’s enWP user page I guess the relevant country is New Zealand. IIUC the rights on a commissioned photo there belong to the person ordering the work unless the contract says otherwise. So even a professional portrait’s copyright might belong to a family member. Also AFAICT the 50-year term for a work of unknown authorship doesn’t start until it’s published.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 20:59, 2 January 2024 (UTC)

Non carica la foto edit
Ho una mia foto personale che mi ritrae in una posa di quando facevo ginnastica e gareggiavo ma non riesco a caricarla sulla pagina di Ilenia Meneghesso, nonchè la sottoscritta. Grazie Ilenia79 (talk) 15:09, 2 January 2024 (UTC)
- I'm a bit confused here.
- Normally, the copyright of a photo belongs to the photographer, not the subject, and only the owner of the copyright can grant a license. So if the photo is of you, then presumably you are not the person who can legitimately grant a license.
- On the technical side: you don't say what tool you were using to upload the photo, or what went wrong, but usually the best way for beginners to upload to Commons is with Special:UploadWizard.
- By the way, if you are Ilenia Meneghesso, you may want to set up a verified account. Not required since you are using only your first name, but probably still a good idea. See Commons:Username policy#Well-known names and names of organizations. - Jmabel ! talk 19:17, 2 January 2024 (UTC)

Wrong "Inventories of American Painting and Sculpture control number" link generated edit
The Inventories of American Painting and Sculpture control number for the https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Mary_Cassatt,_Mother_and_Child,_c._1905,_NGA_46573.jpg painting is 08600040.The value stored at https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q20190957 is IAP 08600040. With that value, the References link generated in the https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Mary_Cassatt,_Mother_and_Child,_c._1905,_NGA_46573.jpg Summary section points to https://siris-artinventories.si.edu/ipac20/ipac.jsp?&menu=search&index=.NW&term=IAP resulting in the following warning when that is accessed:
Search results:
373832 titles matched:IAP
Warning: Unable to sort search results. The maximum number of results for searching has been exceeded.
That link is different from the Inventories of American Painting and Sculpture control number https://siris-artinventories.si.edu/ipac20/ipac.jsp?&menu=search&index=.NW&term=IAP%2008600040 link at the https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q20190957 file, that instead of 373832 results, only finds the painting of interest.
For some reason whatever generates the https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Mary_Cassatt,_Mother_and_Child,_c._1905,_NGA_46573.jpg Summary section References link is truncating what follows IAP in the https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q20190957 Inventories of American Painting and Sculpture control number. - Good observation. You could post to Commons:Village pump/Technical also. This problem also affects other files, probably all files in the same situation. Strangely, the link to the inventory in the category links to a search page on the number, which is not as bad as in the file description pages, although not correct either. -- Asclepias (talk) 16:43, 3 January 2024 (UTC)
Image usage rights edit
Hello, I got permission from the Utah Historical Society to use this image of the delegates from the Utah Constitutional Convention. They historical society said to upload it with the stipulation that it had to be used for non-commercial purposes, and credit should be given. I uploaded it like that, but upon returning to the file later on I found someone had changed it to be "public domain." I am confused and want to avoid trouble with the Utah Historical Society and would appreciate any help. Thanks. Moroni713 (talk) 19:03, 3 January 2024 (UTC)
- @Moroni713: On what possible basis are they claiming that a U.S. image published in 1895 is still in copyright? Clearly it is {{PD-US-expired}}, no matter what they may say.
- FWIW, if it were still copyrighted (and they owned the copyright), non-commercial licenses are not acceptable for Commons. - Jmabel ! talk 20:38, 3 January 2024 (UTC)
- @Jmabel Does that include movie posters and TV shows promo artworks such as this one from NCIS that just came out yesterday? RayKVega (talk) 23:25, 3 January 2024 (UTC)
- @RayKVega: Yes, similar rules for everything - per Commons:Copyright rules by territory/United States looks like that NCIS image may fall into the public domain 95 years after creation, so could probably be uploaded here on 1 January 2120. -- Infrogmation of New Orleans (talk) 23:36, 3 January 2024 (UTC)
- 2120. I made a similar mistake a week ago. But, yes, 95 years assuming there is no identified individual author. If there is, then for U.S. works first published 2003 or later, it's life + 70 years, which of course could be earlier or later, but for works whose authors were alive at time of publication won't begin to be relevant at all before 2073. - Jmabel ! talk 00:15, 4 January 2024 (UTC)
- Yes thanks, Jmabel, year corrected :-) I was aware that there are also other factors - which is why I said "may" rather than "will" - but I wanted to give RayKVega a general sense that it wouldn't be PD any time soon. Cheers! -- Infrogmation of New Orleans (talk) 02:07, 4 January 2024 (UTC)

- Yes, the image published in the USA in 1895 is {{PD-US-expired}}, no matter what the Historical Society may say. Giving them a link or credit as a courtesy is good, but understand they cannot put a copyright restriction on something that is already public domain. -- Infrogmation of New Orleans (talk) 23:39, 3 January 2024 (UTC)
- I should also point out, it's by J. W. Shipler, who died in 1937. So it'd be "-auto-expired|1937". DS (talk) 23:42, 3 January 2024 (UTC)

I need help! edit
I'm not sure about uploading a screenshot of another website to Commons. Do I still need to display the license of copyright? What if there's insufficient info about the license of the website? Cowboyhats12 (talk) 20:00, 3 January 2024 (UTC)
- @Cowboyhats12: There is no general answer to your question, you'd need to give a more concrete example.
- For what it's worth, well over 95% of what is on the Internet is copyrighted, does not offer a free license, and therefore is not suitable for Commons. - Jmabel ! talk 20:42, 3 January 2024 (UTC)
- @Cowboyhats12 Jmabel is right. Commons only accepts commercial-type licenses according to COM:Licensing#Acceptable licenses, like CC-BY, CC-BY-SA, CC-zero, and PD. See also COM:CRSM#Internet images. JWilz12345 (Talk|Contrib's.) 00:08, 4 January 2024 (UTC)
How to release a photo of a sketch by a dead artist. edit
Hello:
I am. assisting a friend of mine (Mark) in creating a wiki page. The pagee is about an artist who is no longer alive. The artists name is Eugene Chodorow.
Mark has taken a photo of a sketch that Eugene made. That sketch was used by Eugene as a guide when Eugene painted a mural. The Sketch was nevere published. Eugene's daughter, who is still alive, owns the sketch.
Do I have to get Eugene's daughter, to fill out Wikipedia's Creative Commons release form?
Thanks Go1denScarab Go1denScarab (talk) 02:29, 4 January 2024 (UTC)
- @Go1denScarab:
- If Eugene's daughter has a web presence that is clearly hers, and where it is clear that she is the artist's daughter, she can just grant the license on a page clearly under her control. Then you or anyone can reference that as a source when uploading. She could even do that after-the-fact, with her permission and the Commons file page cross-linking to one another.
- In theory, Eugene's daughter can create an account of her own and upload using a license like {{Cc-by-sa-4.0-heirs}}, but I could imagine someone doubting her identity and having no way to check without going through VRT anyway, so I don't recommend that approach.
- I think the simplest thing would be for Eugene's daughter to go through the process outlined at COM:VRT to grant a license.

- @Go1denScarab: Right, and you also need permission from Mark for the photo. — 🇺🇦Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 03:06, 4 January 2024 (UTC)
Is there a template for "this file should be wikitext?" edit
I very vaguely remember that I used to tag files as "this should be wikitext, replace with the following wiki-code and delete the file later", but I forgot whether I used to use a template for these. I tried searching for "replaced by Wikitext" in Special:Search under the "general help" preset, but most of the hits were deletion requests. Artoria2e5 contribs 04:04, 4 January 2024 (UTC)
- I'm an idiot, Template:ShouldBeText. Artoria2e5 contribs 04:08, 4 January 2024 (UTC)
